The Washington Post reported on the night.
She (Dame Edna) is an awfully large-boned person, lounging now on a smallish couch in her tiny dressing room at the NBC studios, still flush with schoolgirl excitement after taping her bit on the "Tonight" show, where she sat beside a fidgety Nicole Kidman and admonished her to stop pressing her hands between her thighs. "Making a little hand sandwich, I call it," Edna says. "Between her hams." The naughty sheila.
And this ...
Before Dame Edna came out to air-kiss Jay Leno, Kidman confessed to the host that she finds Edna "scary."
Well, you know," Edna says, "actresses. It was just nerves. I forgive a lot in these young people. Between you and me, actresses, unless someone's written their lines for them, they are permanently tongue-tied. But I was a shoulder for her to cry on when she broke up with Tom."
As in former husband Cruise. "I supported her a lot. You know she couldn't cry on his shoulder unless he stood on, well, a small stepladder, could she really? And I mean that in a very very nice way. I do. She is a very tall, almost unnaturally tall, girl. Well, but look at Mel."
