| Story Archer's Adventure is set in Australia and is the story of Archer, the first horse to win the Melbourne Cup in 1861 and again in 1862. This film covers the first win only. Archer had to be walked and ridden by its handler Dave Power, from it's stables in Nowra, New South Wales (NSW) on the east coast of Australia to Flemington, a suburb of Melbourne, Victoria. This was a distance of 560 miles ( 850 kilometres) across some extremely demanding mountainous bushland. There was no cup given to the first winner of the Melbourne Cup race. Instead the prize was a gold watch and £710 (old Australian pounds). Background The Melbourne Cup is held every year on the 1st Tuesday in November, although the first race was apparently on Thursday 7th November. The main race is said to 'Stop the Nation' and is watched on TV across the country and the world. It is regarded as one of the World's greatest 3200 metres handicap races. Originally the distance was 2 miles. Archer won the first and second Melbourne Cups. The jockey for both races was Jack .E. Cutts, and the owner was Etienne De Mestre. An actual cup was not awarded until 1985. There were only about 4,000 people to watch the first cup. There were 4 events on the card on that day. 2 horses died during the main race (Dispatch and Medora) and another horse (Twilight) started too early and was not captured until he had run the whole course. Archer was rumoured to have walked again from Nowra to Melbourne the following year (1862). However it is thought in reality Archer went anonymously by ship that year, and it was only the first year he walked the distance of 560 miles. There is even some dispute the horse was walked the first year. |
