| Story A dry comedy about the last few weeks of an 1860 expedition across the Australian continent by explorers Robert O'Hara Burke (Garry McDonald) and William John Wills (Kim Gyngell). The expedition turns into a musical with Burke obsessed with a singer (Nicole Kidman) Comments The explorers Burke and Wills are generally regarded as heros in Australian folklore. This film attempts to reduce their hero status a little by poking some fun. Although not obvious in the film, it was actually shot in a quarry. Shortly after Wills and Burke was released, came the big budget film 'Burke and Wills. The real expedition set out to cross the harsh interior of Australia from the Southern coast (Melbourne) to the Northern coast (Gulf of Carpenteria). It was the biggest and most expensive expedition in Australia's history. It had to battle the extremes of the Australian climate and landscape. Unfortunately it ended with many lives being lost. |
