Daniel Craig is announced to play the part of Lord Asriel (and not Paul Bettany after all). Daniel also stars in another of Nicole's films "The Visting" (release early 2007).

Nicole finally confirmed by Variety for the role.

According to filmforce, Nicole confirmed for the role of Mrs Coulter. However they have a disclaimer that even at this stage it is not official. Paul Bettany is in talks to play Lord Asriel. Filming is announced to start in September, with some filming already under way..

Nicole still only rumoured as a possibility for the film, however at this stage has not accepted. Perhaps wedding plans were on her mind (June 25, 2006)

Chris Weitz cames back as director. (See below). His production company, Depth of Field, will produce the Golden Compass along with Scholastic Entertainment and New Line.

Chris Weitz announces he will not direct "His Dark Materials" Trilogy due to his lack of expertise on the technical challenges the filming would require. He has already written the screenplay at this stage.  (Source Film Force ) .

STORY OUTLINE
The Golden Compass is based on the book "The Golden Compass" by Philip Pullman.  It is the first book in the "His Dark Materials" trilogy. The other books in the trilogy are "The Subtle Knife" and "The Amber Spyglass".

The story involves a young girl who encounters supernatural creatures during her sojourn to save her best friend

An excerpt from the Random House webpage:.

"In The Golden Compass, readers meet for the first time 11-year-old Lyra Belacqua, a precocious orphan growing up within the precincts of Jordan College in Oxford, England. It quickly becomes clear that Lyra's Oxford is not precisely like our own - nor is her world. In Lyra's world, everyone has a personal dæmon, a lifelong animal familiar. This is a world in which science, theology and magic are closely intertwined. "

And on Nicole's character, Mrs Coulter, whose daemon is a Golden Monkey, Random House describe her as initially as follows: 

"Mrs. Coulter, a beautiful and bewitching woman. Mrs. Coulter is a scholar and an explorer - seemingly everything that Lyra could ever hope to be. Mrs. Coulter takes Lyra under her wing and employs her as an assistant to help in the next expedition to explore the Arctic North. "
