Nicole Kidman and Russell Crowe Plan a Fine Film Romance With Baz 5/5/05

Nicole Kidman and Russell Crowe seem to be keen to put the disastrous Eucalyptus behind them and move on with their plans to team up for a movie.

The couple had signed on to star in Eucalyptus but the project was halted due to wrecked sets and controversial script issues. But that hasn't stopped Kidman and Crowe from planning another project together - Australian director Baz Luhrmann is in negotiations with the pair about a new romance film he is planning. Luhrmann, who directed Kidman in Moulin Rouge, insists his new project is like "an Aussie Gone With the Wind."

"AUSTRALIA" MOVIE EXCITEMENT.
We had our sensational NKU reporter, Meisha on the ground with Bowen photos and video of the shorthorn cattle being herded and trained for the movie..See her first Bowen pics and video here. and later with Hugh Jackman, Bryan Brown, Baz Luhrmann, Brandon Walters here. Now with Photos of Hugh Jackman and Bryan Brown and BAZ

Above: Nicole on set - First day of filming in Bowen for "Australia"

STORY OUTLINE
The film is to be a romantic action-adventure set in northern Australia prior to World War II, and centres on an English aristocrat (Kidman) who inherits a huge ranch .When English cattle barons plot to take her land, she reluctantly joins forces with a rough-hewn cattle driver (Jackman) to drive 2,000 head of cattle across hundreds of miles of the country's most unforgiving land, only to still face the bombing of Darwin, Australia, by the Japanese forces that had attacked Pearl Harbor only months earlier.

At one point the film did not have a name, although there was a rumour of "Ten Thousand Horses", this came from a pub session mentioned on a blog with tongue in cheek and there was no other evidence this was the real name.  And in fact this turned out to be the case. The film now being officially named "Australia".

Initial story details were gleaned from Baz Luhrmann and Russell Crowe during public appearances. Russell Crowe was to be the leading male in the film, however is no longer on the film as of May 2006

Above: Scans from Australian Geographic 2000 showing the beauty of the Kimberleys.
The film will be shot in the Australian outback, in the Kimberleys where Baz will put up about 260 cast and crew.

According to Russell Crowe, it is romance where he would have got to "swoon" over Nicole Kidman and ride horses a bit.

Russell is also quoted as saying "The first draft was a double goose bump with tears, it was just a magnificent read" (Sun-Herald -22 January 2006)

Above: Baz on cattle drive. Article scanned from Daily Telegraph May 30, 2005.
Baz Luhrmann went on a major cattle drive in Australia in 2005 (The Great Australian Outback Cattle Drive) and it appears this was research for the film.So expect to see a fair number of cattle.
