Nicole has been a patron of the Sydney Childrens Hospital for a number of years and always makes a point of visiting the children when she is in Australia. In 2007 she held a special screening of her film The Golden Compass for those old enough to see it, and in 2006 she held a special screening of Happy Feet for the children.

Nicole has been a UNICEF ambassador for many years. She has now taken on the role of UNIFEM ambassador. UNIFEM is the women's funding area of the United Nations and aims to provide empowerment and equality to women around the world. FARA Foundation is a registered charity in the UK which co-ordinates and administers all activities in Romania.
Nicole became involved with the charity during the filming of the movie 'Cold
Mountain' in Romania, spending the day with some of the orphans from St Gabriel's orphanage. She has recently won libel cases against newspapers for ill-founded rumours implicating her in a divorce case, and says she will donate the money awarded to her to FARA.

Nicole supports this organisation which has special meaning to her due to her mother contracting breast cancer when Nicole was still in school. Nicole and her mother appeared on the cover of the first Pink Ribbon magazine in Australia. Dylan is an Australian boy with neuroblastoma who is currently living in hospital in New York City where he has been for a few years as there was no cure in Ausrtalia. With amazing spirit he continues to fight this disease, with conisderable love and dedication from his family. Nicole has visited him a number of times and takes a keen interest in his progress, arranging for Angelina Jolie to visit him too when Nicole heard Dylan was a fan of hers.
